On the weekend of September 7-9, Jim Buyea, Ken and
myself attended the New York State Softball Officials (NYSSO)
school at Saratoga Springs, N.Y. We got three days of intense
instruction in all the aspects of our game here are the reports:
From Jim Buyea:
The weekend of Sept 7-9 I had the pleasure of
attending the NYSSO school of umpiring with 58 of my fellow
NYSSO members. We worked on our strike zones, the button
hook, three man rotation, and much more! The school is
something that every umpire should try to attend, not only because
you it can give you insight on how to improve your game, but
because it also gives you the opportunity to share your game
with your fellow umpires from across the state!
The instructors there, including our own Kathy
Zifchock and Bruce Wittman, are top-notch! The way they present
things always in ways makes it easy to apply them in game
situations. It is always easy to forget how lucky we are to have
Kathy and Bruce inour group. They, and all the other people
involved in this, must put in countless timeand effort in preparing for
this school.
If you have the chance to go to this school - do
so! It is very informative, and a real good time for all!
from Ken Bishop:
My fellow CHVBGSO umpires:
This past weekend of Sept 7-9, I had the
opportunity to attend the NYSSO umpire school in Saratoga Springs.
I was able to share this opportunity with Jim Buyea, Lou Sherwood,
and about 60 otherumpires from across the state. I couldn't ask for
better roomates! We had the pleasure of of learning from not only
the best clinicians from across the sate, but also some of the best in
the country! The were not only knowledgable and professional, but
also very personable, but they were also very willing to answer
whatever questionsyou might have. The chance to meet and
befriend some of our fellow umpires from across the state was an
added bonus - I picked up great tips and information from my
conversations with them as well. The weekend was not only a
fantastic learning experience, but it was also a also a lot of fun! I
think Jim and Lou would agree with me that not only did it make
better umpires of us, but better people as well!
MY THOUGHTS
First of all, I would like to thankJim and Ken
for being great roomies! It isalways great to get to know someone a
lot better - especially these guys! I also wou like to thank Bruce,
Kathy, and all the otherinstructors at the NYSSO School for their
hard work, their dedication, and their unfailing good humor in the
way they performed their instruction. No matter what you may
have heard, their only goal is to make you better umpires, and for
you to 'spread the word' to your fellow umpires!
To show you what kind of people the staff was, I
want to tell one story (I am getting as bad as Bruce!):
One of the instructors that has been there
for a few years is a gentleman named Ed Whipple - a senior
NCAA Div I/II umpire - a more dedicated and NICER man than you
can meet anywhere! Also, as fine as an instructor as you will ever
meet too!
Anyways, on Friday night, after we all had
been on the hot fields all afternoon, and then in a hot gym all
evening, most of us went back to the motel, to perhaps (AHEM) re-
hydrate (AHEM)a little. After a while, we went out to the motel
courtyard - there Ed was giving concise, CLEAR dissertations on:
illegal pitches, the DP/FLEX, and the best lineup card
maintenance talk I have ever heard! Now THAT is dedication!
The school is an experience that should NOT be missed!
Its a blast!
